Central Works presents AN ANONYMOUS STORY BY ANTON CHEKHOV 2/20-3/28

By: Jan. 22, 2010

Central Works opens its 20th anniversary season with a new play adapted from the Chekhov novella, An Anonymous Story. This little known gem recounts the tale of an ailing revolutionary who poses as a footman in the service of a government official. But the "anonymous" man's political principles are put to the ultimate test when he falls in love with the mistress of his adversary. "A compact symphony of frustrated emotions, incompatibility and estrangement, destroyed dreams and bitter compromises: the very essence of Chekhov." Kirkus Reviews

The production: Developed using the Central Works Method of collaborative play development, An Anonymous Story by Anton Chekhov is written by company co-director, Gary Graves, and directed by Central Works founding artistic director, Søren Oliver. Featuring Richard Frederick*, Dennis Markam, Cat Thompson*, Sandra Schlechter and Jordan Winer (*members AEA), with costumes by Tammy Berlin and sound by Gregory Scharpen.

Central Works: Now in its 20th season, Central Works continues its mission to develop and produce new works for the theater. Using its own method of collaborative development, the company brings artists together as partners in a creative project from its conception through to a fully developed production. Having produced 25 world premieres since 1997, "An Anonymous Story" is the first new work in the Central Works New Play Program, 2010-2012, set to develop and produce 9 new plays in the next 3 years.

The 2010 season: An Anonymous Story by Anton Chekhov will be followed in August by the return of Machiavelli's The Prince, last season's sold-out success. The season closes with a new comedy, Penelope's Odyssey, opening in October.
