Celebration Arts Presents A HOUSE WITH NO WALLS, Runs 4/23-5/29

By:

Celebration Arts presents a fascinating new drama A House With No Walls, by Thomas Gibbons. Directed by James Wheatley, A House With No Walls will open April 23, 2010 and show Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. through May 29, 2010. There will be no performance on Sunday, April 25. Celebration Arts Theatre is located at 4469 D Street, Sacramento.

A bitter controversy starts when it is revealed that a new museum, dedicated to liberty, will be built on the very site where George Washington's slaves' house once stood. An African-American political activist occupies the site and insists that the house should be recreated as a memorial to the slaves and serve as a reminder of the reality of American slavery. His opponents, which include a prominent African-American conservative author, argues that blacks must lay aside their pursuit of ‘victimhood' if they want to achieve equality in America.

The play, set in modern times, also flashes back to the 1700's when slavery is predominant in America. We see the heartfelt struggle of Oney Judge, one of Washington's slaves, as she struggles with the decision of whether to risk everything to escape her bondage.

A House With No Walls raises an interesting dilemma, with audiences of all races...of what part of history to commemorate and what, if any part to leave behind.

Ticket price: $15 general and $13 students and seniors. On Thursday night all seats are $8. Call (916) 455-2787 for information and reservations
