Annex Theatre will Close Season with Kelleen Conway Blanchard's The Underneath Oct. 18 – Nov. 16

By: Oct. 12, 2013

Just in from the Annex Theatre - Kelleen Conway Blanchard has a wonderfully productive relationship with Annex Theatre. Last summer's prison romp Kittens in a Cage is a contender for Best New Play at this year's Theatre Puget Sound Gregory Awards, and she is currently developing a vampire tale, Blood Countess, for next fall. This season, Blanchard lends her unique sensibilities to seaside horror in The Underneath.

Taking loving aim at B-horror movie tropes and weaving a creepy and hilarious tale in its own right, The Underneath tells the story of Tina, misunderstood girl genius, stuck in a town whose new fish-themed water park is angering some ancient forces.

Body parts, both human and animal, are washing up on shore, and the local Sheriff distracts himself from the awful mystery and his messy divorce by baking crumb cake. He's also been sleeping with Tina's mom, who is distracting herself from her own troubles with lots and lots of pills.

Throw in a sweet younger sister, a hissing tentacle in a jar, a robot arm, a former sailor turned fry cook, nefarious twin entrepreneurs, and some horny performing dolphins and you've got all the ingredients for a marvelous horror story, doling up laughs and shivers in equal measure.

Much of the team that contributed to Kitten's success are back for The Underneath. Jana Hutchison once again provides makeup and special effects, Kyle Thompson returns as sound designer, and Bret Fetzer, who directed Kittens, turns his attention to creating the perfect salt-soaked set, while Annex's Artistic Director Pamala Mijatov takes the helm.

So dust off your slicker, fry up some fish sticks, and head on down to Wally Walrus Waterpark. You're in for a Monstrous good time.

Annex Theatre is a democratic collective of theatre artists dedicated to creating bold new work in an environment of improbability, resourcefulness and risk. Annex Theatre produces new plays by living playwrights, radical reinterpretations of classic scripts, and ensemble-generated non-linear spectacles. Now in its Capitol Hill venue, Annex originally opened its doors in 1987 in a former dance studio on 4th Avenue in downtown Seattle. Since then the theater has produced hundreds of world and Northwest premieres.

The Underneath Performs October 18th -November 16th Thursday - Saturday 8pm. Tickets $5-$20. All Thursdays Pay-What-You-Can. www.annextheatre.org
