African-American Shakespeare Company Presents OTHELLO
By: BWW News Desk
San Francisco's African-American Shakespeare Company closes its 15th season with a thrilling interpretation of William Shakespeare's OTHELLO. Told simultaneously from three (Othello, Desdemona, and Iago) points of view, this compelling story re-sets one of The Bard's greatest tragedies during a military tribunal in Iraq, where race and sexual politics become the driving force for jealousy and revenge. African-American Shakespeare Company Executive Director Sherri Young helms this modern take on love undone by jealousy.
This production is part of the Shake-It-Up program and is supported by a special National Endowment for the Arts initiative with Arts Midwest's "Shakespeare for a New Generation."The African-American Shakespeare Company is dedicated to producing classic stage works from an African-American cultural perspective, providing opportunities and accessibility for minority artists and their communities to view these works in a manner that is inclusive of their cultural heritage. For the past 15 years, African-American Shakespeare Company has produced over 40 productions, toured 85 schools, and reached over 87,000 patrons through its main stage productions and arts education programs.DATES:March 25-April 18, 2010SHOWS:
