A.C.T. Takes Part in National Marriage Equality's STANDING ON CEREMONY

By:

American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) is set to take part in the free staged reading presentation of Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays in tandem with over 40 theaters around the country on Monday, November 7, 2011, at 5 p.m.

Created in response to the ongoing battle for marriage equality throughout the United States, nine acclaimed playwrights (Mo Gaffney, Jordan Harrison, Jeffrey Hatcher, Moises Kaufman, Neil LaBute, Wendy MacLeod, José Rivera, Paul Rudnick, and Doug Wright) have written short plays to create an evening of theater that is as insightful and stirring as it is funny and heartwarming.

Conceived by Brian Shnipper and directed by members of the A.C.T. artistic family and staff, including A.C.T. Artistic Director Carey Perloff, Standing on Ceremony celebrates the courage it takes to be in a relationship-any relationship. A.C.T.'s presentation of Standing on Ceremony will be performed at the same time as more than 40 other productions at theaters across the country. Following the presentation, audience members will have the opportunity to take part in a lively Q&A with the playwrights via video from the off-Broadway production in New York. Perloff said: "Given the Bay Area's enormous interest in the issue of gay marriage, we jumped at the change to participate in this fabulous national event, sponsored by the ever-intrepid Tectonic Theater Project. We hope it will be a terrific opportunity for our own community to come together around this issue and all the repercussions, both serious and comic, that it has provoked." Standing on Ceremony performs one night only on Monday, November 7, 2011, at 5 p.m., in The Garret at the American Conservatory Theater (415 Geary Street, 5th Floor, San Francisco).

The presentation is free and open to the public. Space is limited, and reservations are strongly recommended.
