American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) announced today the cancellation of David Byrne and Fatboy Slim's Here Lies Love, originally scheduled to close A.C.T.'s 2016-17 season. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the legendary Summer of Love in San Francisco-coinciding with A.C.T.'s 50th anniversary-A.C.T. will now present the critically acclaimed musical, A Night with Janis Joplin.

Says Peter Pastreich, A.C.T. Executive Director: "After reviewing the production costs and the complexity involved with transforming The Geary Theater to present Here Lies Love, we made the difficult, but fiscally responsible, decision to cancel the production. We look forward to bringing rock and roll legend Janis Joplin to life on The Geary Theater stage. We can't think of a better way to celebrate the Summer of Love anniversary."

"David Byrne and Alex Timbers are artists whom I deeply admire, and we have tried for over two years to find a way to bring their immersive vision of Here Lies Love to the San Francisco Bay Area," adds Carey Perloff, A.C.T. Artistic Director. "Ultimately the logistics and cost proved insurmountable. I hope we will have another chance to collaborate in the future. In the meantime, what better moment to celebrate the power of love and the uniqueness of the Bay Area than by rocking out to the incredible music of Janis Joplin and the women who influenced her!"

Fueled by such unforgettable songs as "Me and Bobby McGee," "Piece of My Heart," "Mercedes Benz," "Cry Baby" and "Summertime," A Night with Janis Joplin, written and directed by RAndy Johnson, is a musical journey celebrating Janis and her biggest musical influences-icons like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone, and Bessie Smith, who inspired one of rock and roll's greatest legends. A Night with Janis Joplin will perform at A.C.T.'s Geary Theater June 7-July 2, 2017. Casting and ticket information will be announced at a later date.

In 1967, nearly 100,000 young people converged on the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, turning San Francisco into the epicenter of a cultural phenomenon known as the Summer of Love. Led by San Francisco Travel and the California Historical Society, the City of San Francisco will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love in 2017 with special events, major exhibits, and concerts throughout the city.
