The UC San Diego Department of Theatre and Dance presents The Misanthrope, by Molière and directed by Nicholas Rapp.
About the play: Exhausted with uncertainty, Alceste finds himself at a party in order to uncover the true nature of Celimene's affections. There he encounters society; a slick, capricious people, each in his estimation embodiments of decaying values and apathy in the face of corruption. With an unjust lawsuit hanging over his head, he comes to realize first hand the merit of speaking disingenuously- as a course to survive. Alceste must finally decide whether his personal convictions are more or less important than his place in this world. 1666. A comedy.
The preview for The Misanhrope will be February 20 at 7 pm. The show runs February 22 and 23 and March 1 and 2 at 7:30 pm with an additional 2 pm matinee performance on February 23.
Tickets are $20 for regular performances. Subscriptions and group rates are available. Student tickets are $10 for regular performances. Faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens discounts available as well. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the box office at (858) 534-4574.

About the playwright: Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, otherwise known by his stage name Molière, is considered to be one of the greatest playwrights of western society, with plays as perennial staples of theaters since the 17th century. His best known plays include Tartuffe, Don Juan, School for Wives, The Imaginary Invalid, and The Misanthrope.
About the director: Nicholas Rapp is a second-year MFA Directing student. He grew up in Prince George's County, MD, and holds a BA in Theater from UCLA. He has trained with Grzegorz Bral of Song of the Goat, and has attended the La Mama Umbria Directors Symposium. Past credits: RavDogs (Dabney West), CHURCH (Highways Performance Space), Big White Devil (Highways Performance Space), Faustus (UCLA 1350). In New York, Nicholas has worked for Mabou Mines and assisted Lee Breuer. UC San Diego credit: The Clitorish for WNPF 2018, Othello (AD).
