SPECIFIC GRAVITY Explores Experiences of Displacement Through Circus, Science, and Spoken Poetry
The Circus Collective of San Diego fuses contemporary circus with a social consciousness in its new project, which aims to raise awareness for displaced refugee by telling their stories through movement and spoken word. Archimedes' principles of displacement, buoyancy, and specific gravity form a metaphorical framework to explore how persons forced out of their homeland overcome obstacles, adapt, and negotiate their identity.
Raw emotion, physicality, and authentic storytelling weave a compelling piece that celebrates courage, resilience, and our shared humanity. The performance includes the use of ground acrobatics, aerial arts (rope, silks, cube and lyra) and spoken word by refugee writers. This show is appropriate for all ages.
With SPECIFIC GRAVITY's successful debut at the INTERSECTIONS festival in Washington, DC, the Circus Collective is bringing their powerful message to the San Diego International Fringe Festival. The troupe has attended the Fringe Festival for the past three years winning "Best Circus Show" in 2015. For more information about San Diego Fringe, visit SDFringe.org.
After each show, the Circus Collective will be collecting donations for The Partnership for the Advancement of New Americans (PANA). PANA is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to advancing the full economic, social, and civic inclusion of refugees in San Diego.
