Among the bleakest of moors, two spinster sisters dwell in their aggressively gloomy mansion with their brother, their mastiff and their maid-in-waiting. When a governess arrives, her presence threatens to unleash lethal secrets and raging desires in a home held together by lies and etiquette. A radical riff on 19th century romantic novels and the sisters who conceived them, The Moors is a riotous and wild comedy pulsating with vivid, macabre glee that has more in common with the present than the period.

Lisa Berger will direct the piece by Jen Silverman. The play stars Gerilyn Brault, John DeCarlo, Hannah Logan, Kim Strassburger, Rachel Esther Tate*, and Whitney BriAnna Thomas.

The Moors is the recipient of a 2015 Edgerton Foundation New American Plays Award.

About the play coming to San Diego, playwright Silverman says, "Artistic Director Matt Morrow has put Diversionary Theatre at the forefront of a multi-layered many-voiced conversation about what queer stories look like - how beautifully complex and vital and surprising they can be. I'm delighted and grateful to have The Moorsbe a part of this conversation, in the same season as work by Jordan Seavey and Philip Dawkins."

Director Berger says: "When Matt sent me the script to consider, I noticed that the character descriptions included a moor hen and a mastiff. I immediately wrote Matt and said, "How could I not love this play?" The Moors is a current conversation disguised as a period piece. A mashed up gothic satire with a hard turn. The play speaks to the idea that although it is necessary for us to become civilized, there is always a piece of us that is lonely for our wildness. I am excited and honestly a little scared to peel back the layers and examine the heart of the play."

THE MOORS plays November 9th - December 10th at Diversionary Theatre.

Tickets are on sale ($15 - $50). Discounts are available to Groups, Students, Educators, Seniors and Military.
