A Midsummer Nights Dream plays at Utah Childrens Theatre August 17th to September 28thFolksy and fun, the show is a perfect way to introduce children to ShakespeareThis years Shakespeare Festival for Kids (and adults with short attention spans) features A Midsummer Nights Dream, one of the bards most famous plays. Theres a reason for that. The show has something for everyone--a love triangle for the romantics, fairies for fantasy and adventure, and some wanna-be actors who appeal to the common man in their hilarious attempt to put on a play.Lexie Thomsen, who plays Helena in UCT's production, feels the show is geared towards kids and families. A few words in the script have been modified to make the language more understandable, but it is very much still Shakespeare. This production is set in 1930s New Orleans, which adds a fun flavor to the show. New Orleans has a magical air to it which goes really well with the fairy theme. A jug band and period folk music add to the ambiance of the bayou setting.Nellie Kelly, the production manager, is excited for patrons to see the stage. Its a playground--it will be unlike anything youve ever seen at Utah Childrens Theatre, or anywhere. The fairies slide onto the stage from various locations, frolicking with delight at the mishaps their magic has caused. Leading the band of fairies in their antics is the mischievous Puck, played by Christopher Taylor. Meighan Smith and Brinton Wilkins portray Titania and Oberon, with Madeline Thatcher as Hermia, Lexie Thomsen as Helena, Sean Sweeney as Lysander, and Tom Roche as Demetrius. Joanne M. Parker directs.Thomsens favorite part of the show is chasing Demetrius around the stage like a lovesick fool. The show is going to be a hoot. Its full of laughter nonstop, as well as moments of love. It is a perfect show for the summer--light, happy, you dont have to think too much to understand it. Performances of A Midsummer Nights Dream will be every Saturday morning at 10:30 am from August 17th through September 28th at Utah Childrens Theatre, 3605 S. State Street in South Salt Lake. Tickets may be purchased online at www.uctheatre.org or by calling 801-532-6000.
