Utah Symphony Announces Deer Valley Music Festival 2017 Lineup, Includes Leslie Odom Jr. And More

Utah Symphony | Utah Opera today announced its lineup for the 2017 Deer Valley® Music Festival in Park City, Utah. Highlights of the five-week, 16-concert music festival, which begins on July 1, 2017 and runs through August 5, 2017, include Utah Symphony performances with Broadway star Leslie Odom Jr., Ben Folds and original members of The Beach Boys; GRAMMY® Award-winner Patti Austin honoring Ella Fitzgerald, "The First Lady of Song," and her 100thbirthday anniversary; "The Music of Prince" in a tribute to the late, great pop rocker; Disney in Concert "A Dream is a Wish" with scenes from favorite animated movies including "Frozen," "The Little Mermaid," and "Pocahontas"; and the perennial favorite, the 1812 Overture! with live cannon fire on the hillside provided by Cannoneers of the Wasatch.

"We're excited to expand our usual offering of live concerts to include the family favorite Harry Potter film with live score played by the Utah Symphony as an entry point for new generations of symphony goers to experience the joy of live orchestral music."


Deer Valley® Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater Performances

The 14th annual Deer Valley® Music Festival in Park City will launch on July 1, 2017 with a Patriotic Celebration conducted by festival-favorite, Jerry Steichen, and featuring singer Lisa Vroman, who has portrayed Christine in "The Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway, among other roles. Program will include Aaron Copland's inspiring "Lincoln Portrait." The festival will continue for five weeks with a dozen pops, rock, jazz and classical concerts on the main stage at Deer Valley Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater and four chamber concerts at the intimate venue of St. Mary's Church.

The second weekend of performances at the Deer Valley® Music Festival will start on Friday, July 7, 2017. 2008 GRAMMY® Award-winner for Best Jazz Vocal Album, Patti Austin, joins the Utah Symphony for Ella at 100, celebrating "The First Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald, and her 100th birthday. The following evening, Saturday, July 8, 2017, "America's band" The Beach Boys -- synonymous with sun, surf and endless California sunshine - will perform their good-vibe music with the Utah Symphony. Boasting three dozen U.S. Top 40 hits (the most by any American rock group), The Beach Boys' chart-topping hits include "Surfin'," "Fun, Fun, Fun," "I Get Around," "Kokomo," "Help Me Rhonda" and "California Girls." Guest conductor Randall Craig Fleischer will lead the Utah Symphony for both programs.

The festival continues on Friday, July 14, 2017, when conductor John Morris Russell leads the Utah Symphony with Gershwin's Greatest Hits featuring "Rhapsody in Blue" performed by guest pianist Kevin Cole. Also on the program are other time-honored Gershwin classics including "I Got Rhythm" Variations, "An American in Paris," and "Symphonic Picture" from "Porgy and Bess." On Saturday, July 15, 2017, Tony Award-winning performer, Leslie Odom Jr., takes the Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater stage with the Utah Symphony and conductor John Morris Russell.

Thursday, July 20, 2017 will bring "The Music of Prince" with the Utah Symphony to rock the Deer Valley® Music Festival main stage with a fitting tribute to the iconic late crooner known for "Purple Rain," "Raspberry Beret," and "Manic Monday." The following evening, Friday, July 21, 2017, five-time GRAMMY® Award-winning jazz pianist and vocalist Diana Krall will return to the festival to headline an intimate evening with songs from her recent album release (Utah Symphony will not perform on this concert). Then on Saturday, July 22, 2017, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone™" in Concert will bring Hogwarts to the Deer Valley® Music Festival main stage as the film is projected in high-definition on a big screen while the Utah Symphony performs John Williams' unforgettable score live, to picture.

The magic of Disney comes to life on Friday, July 28, 2017, as the Utah Symphony will entertain the entire family with music from "The Little Mermaid," "The Lion King," "Frozen," and "Aladdin," in Disney in Concert: "A Dream is a Wish" with original film footage on the big screen, incredible vocalists and the Utah Symphony performing the film scores live. Then, on Saturday, July 29, 2017, multi-platinum-selling, singer-songwriter Ben Folds returns to the festival to perform with the Utah Symphony. Both performances will be conducted by leading Broadway music director Andy Einhorn.

The final weekend of the Deer Valley® Music Festival features the Cannoneers of the Wasatch as they join the Utah Symphony for its traditional performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture! led by Associate Conductor Rei Hotoda with live cannon fire on Friday, August 4, 2017. In addition to this perennial favorite, Utah native pianist Andrew Staupe performs Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Utah Symphony.

On Saturday, August 5, 2016, the 14th annual 2017 Deer Valley® Music Festival will close with the return of fun-loving Fab Four cover band, Classical Mystery Tour, as it celebrates 50 Years of Sgt. Pepperfeaturing music from The Beatles' iconic "Sgt. Pepper" album and other hits.

Chamber Orchestra Series at St. Mary's Church

The Utah Symphony will present four mid-week concerts at the intimate venue, St. Mary's Church, as part of the Deer Valley® Music Festival's chamber orchestra series. On July 5, 2017, Concertmaster Madeline Adkins leads a chamber ensemble in Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" and Mozart's Symphony No. 29.

On July 12, 2017, Jeannette Sorrell, founder of Apollo's Fire (the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra), returns to the festival's chamber venue to conduct "A Night at Bach's Coffeehouse" with selections including "Brandenburg" Concerto No. 3 and Suite No. 1 along with Telemann and Vivaldi's "La Folia."

The series continues on July 19, 2017 with Utah Symphony's outgoing Associate Conductor Rei Hotodaconducting a program with a variety of Romantic composers featuring guest violinist Hana Chang, 1st Laureate of the 2016 Stradivarius International Violin Competition.

The chamber series concludes on July 26, 2017, as incoming Assistant Conductor Conner Gray Covington makes his Deer Valley® Music Festival conducting debut with Utah Symphony Principal Clarinet Tad Calcara playing Aaron Copland's Clarinet Concerto on a program also featuring Rossini, Mendelssohn and Debussy/Büsser.

Concert Ticket Information

Subscription, group, and VIP tickets for the Deer Valley Music Festival are on sale now.
