Salt Lake Community College’s Speakers Bureau and The Grand Theatre Community Institute Present David Oshinsky's 'A Conspiracy So Immense'

Joseph McCarthy scholar Dr. David Oshinsky will be at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) on March 7 to discuss his book "A Conspiracy So Immense: The World of Joe McCarthy" and how it relates to the Grand Theatre production of "The Crucible".

He will be speaking at the SLCC Taylorsville/Redwood Campus in the Oak Room at 12:00 p.m. He will continue the conversation later that evening on the Grand Theatre stage at 6:00 p.m. at a question and answer session moderated by two distinguished SLCC Faculty members. The discussion will focus on Dr. Oshinsky's knowledge of the McCarthy era and how it influenced Arthur Miller and other artists of the time. These events are free and open to the public.

The evening conversation will take place before the preview performance of "The Crucible". The performance is a ticketed event with prices ranging from $24-$10. SLCC receive free admission with student identification. SLCC staff and faculty receive four tickets at a discounted price.

Dr. David Oshinsky holds the Jack S. Blanton Chair in History at The University of Texas at Austin and is a Distinguished Scholar in Residence at New York University. He graduated from Cornell in 1965 and obtained his PhD from Brandeis University in 1971. His books include "Worse Than Slavery," which won the Robert Kennedy Book Award for its "distinguished contribution to human rights" and was also a New York Times "notable book of the year;" and "Polio: An American Story," which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for History in 2006. His reviews and essays appear regularly in the New York Times and other national publications.

This event has been made possible by the sponsorship of SLCC's Speakers Bureau, the Grand Theatre Community Institute, SLCC's School of Humanities and Social Science and the Utah Humanities Council. The Speakers Bureau is a new component of SLCC that seeks to bring nationally acclaimed speakers to the college to expand the student experience and invite the greater community to enjoy these speakers and what they bring to Salt Lake Valley.
