SO Percussion to Perform with University of Utah Music Students
As part of the UtahPresents 2016-17 season, SO Percussion will perform Steven Reich's Drumming, featuring five students from the University of Utah's School of Music, at Libby Gardner Concert Hall on Friday, February 3 at 7:30PM.
Tickets are $25, with a $5 ticket for U of U students and a $10 ticket for non-U students, and are available at 801-581-7100 or utahpresents.org.
With innovative multi-genre original productions, sensational interpretations of modern classics, and an "exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor and bedlam," (The New Yorker), SO Percussion has redefined the scope and role of the modern percussion ensemble.
Comprised of musicians Eric Cha-Beach, Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski, and Jason Treuting, SO's repertoire ranges from "classics" of the 20th century, by John Cage, Steve Reich, and Iannis Xenakis, et al, to commissioning and advocating works by contemporary composers such as David Lang, Steve Mackey, and Paul Lansky, to distinctively modern collaborations with artists who work outside the classical concert hall.
For SO Percussion, the reasons to play Steve Reich's Drumming are simple: it is exhilarating to perform, it is elemental yet intelligent, and it is fun to share with audiences. The other story, however, is a revolutionary approach to musical composition. Although every note of Drumming rocks, its existence is due to the composer's tireless search for new modes of musical expression.
In addition to the public performance, featuring U of U music students, there will also be a free performance and open class for Salt Lake Community College students, as well as a master class for the U's percussion studio students.
