Plan B Theatre Seeks Submissions from Local Playwrights Under 35; Deadline Jan 31, 2014

By:

Plan-B Theatre Company, in partnership with the David Ross Fetzer Foundation for Emerging Artists, seeks new plays from playwrights 35 years old and younger who reside in Utah, are Utah natives, or who otherwise have a substantial Utah connection.

David Fetzer passed away suddenly in December of 2012. We at Plan-B consider ourselves blessed that that he spent the last year of his life with us, creating roles in Jenifer Nii's THE SCARLET LETTER and Debora Threedy's THE THIRD CROSSING. He also created the role of Everett Ruess in Threedy's THE END OF THE HORIZON in 2008.

Scripts will be read by a committee of theatre professionals, and those familiar with David's specific tastes, including Jerry Rapier, Producing Director of Plan-B Theatre Company, playwrights Jenifer Nii and Debora Threedy, and others TBA. The application to be completed and submitted along with your script may be found by clicking Theatre Application at http://thedaveyfoundation.org/grants-2/theatre-grant-in-conjunction-with-plan-b-theatre/.

We are looking for innovative scripts that may make use of multimedia, recognizing, however, the relatively small performance space - the Studio Theatre at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center. Our joint hope it to further, in some small way, the work David envisioned when he founded New Works Theatre Machine. Truthfully, we'll be looking for plays that David would want to see that also fit Plan-B's mission.

The submission deadline is January 31, 2014 (scripts welcomed anytime between now and then), and the Award announcement will be March 15, 2014. The winning play will receive its world premiere in early 2015, as part of Plan-B Theatre Company's 2014/15 season.

Plan-B Theatre Company develops and produces unique and socially conscious theatre with a focus on new plays by Utah playwrights. The recipient of The Davey Foundation fellowship will receive a private reading in the spring of 2014 as part of Plan-B's Playwrights Lab, a public reading in the summer of 2014 and a world premiere production in early 2015 as part of Plan-B's 2014/15 season.

There are some production parameters to observe:
- cast size is 5 people maximum (that's number of actors not number of characters)
- your play must be able to be produced in a minimalist style
- keep the composition of the Salt Lake City talent pool in mind

Please contact Jerry Rapier at jerry@planbtheatre.org with any questions. For more information on the life and music/film/theatre career of David Fetzer, visit thedaveyfoundation.org.
