Eliza Griswold to Speak at SLCC, 4/9

By:

New York Times Bestselling Book author Eliza Griswold will address the Student Conference on Writing and Social Justice sponsored by Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) on April 9, 2012 at the College's Grand Theatre (1575 South State Street, Salt Lake City, Utah). Griswold, an accomplished journalist and poet, is currently a senior fellow at the New America Foundation. Formerly of Harvard University, she reports on religion and human rights. Griswold's Tenth Parallel: Dispatches from the Fault Line Between Christianity and Islam offers a frank examination of the conflict between the two religious traditions. As Linda Robinson of the New York Times Sunday Book Review states, "The Tenth Parallel is a beautifully written book, full of arresting stories woven around a provocative issue - whether fundamentalism leads to violence - which Griswold investigates through individual lives rather than caricatures or abstractions."

The SLCC Student Conference on Writing and Social Justice explores how individuals and groups can impact society and government policy through writing. Partnering with Utah Civility and Community, the theme for the 2012 conference is "Doing Democracy: Inclusive Civil Discourse." Undergraduate students from SLCC, and colleges and universities across Utah, will explore the complicated role of civility in society, as well as how writing impacts democracy and civic institutions.

The Student Conference on Writing and Social Justice is funded in part by a grant from SLCC Arts and Cultural Events Committee, the SLCC English Department, the SLCC School of Developmental Education and Learning Resources, the SLCC Student Writing Center, the SLCC Publication Center, the Thayne Center for Service and Learning at Salt Lake Community College, and the SLCC Community Writing Center.
