The funny and heartwarming tour of DR. SEUSS' HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! THE MUSICAL, currently playing at the Capitol Theatre, is sure to bring the Christmas spirit to both the young and young at heart. Featuring some recognizable elements of British panto and nostalgic television specials, and clocking in at a kid-friendly 90 minutes, it is a great show to enjoy as a family.

DR. SEUSS' HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! THE MUSICAL (book and lyrics by Timothy Mason, music by Mel Marvin, additional music and lyrics by Albert Hague and Dr. Seuss) tells the well-known tale of the cantankerous Grinch who steals all the presents of the Christmas-loving Whos, only to learn that perhaps Christmas doesn't come from a store.

Although the original story (and its television and film adaptations) are justifiably beloved, this anemic stage adaptation adds little in terms of character or plot development. Few of the songs are memorable, and even fewer help move the story along. The children's theatre vibe of the piece makes it less satisfying for adults but perfect for the whole family to enjoy together.

Adults and children alike will appreciate the Seussian scenic design by John Lee Beatty, the festive lighting design by Pat Collins, and the whimsical costume design by Robert Morgan. The choreography (by Bob Richard, original choreography by John DeLuca) is a gleeful confection and one of the biggest strengths of the production.

Sweet moments abound throughout the show, as do moments of genuine laugh-out-loud laughter. This is largely due to the strong comedic chops of Stefan Karl as the Grinch. He embodies the iconic character with a fierce abandon that delights, keeping the character recognizable while also making it his own.

Another strong standout in the cast is the amiable narrator, Old Max, played by Bob Lauder. (Young Max is played exuberantly by Andreas Wyder.)

Also leading the cast are the pleasant performances by Vincent DiPeri as Papa Who, Melissa Weisbach as Mama Who, David Thornton as Grandpa Who, and Katy Vaughn as Grandma Who.

DR. SEUSS' HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! THE MUSICAL will play at the Capitol Theatre through November 23, 2014. For tickets, call ArtTix at 801-355-ARTS (2787) or visit www.arttix.org.
