Thistle Dew Playwrights Group and Reading Group
At the Thistle Dew:
Sacramento's original playwrights Workshop Theatre
The workshop members and the owners of The Thistle Dew, Tom and Ellie, are dedicated to support playwrights and making the Thistle Dew Theatre available for production of their original works.
"Calling all playwrights and wanna-bees!"
Beginning January 30th, on alternating Monday evenings at 7pm, jump into the critique fray or listen quietly....until your passions rise and you feel compelled to join the mêlée. Several people have joined the group, experienced the process and returned with their own play and had it produced here at 'the Dew' or published.
Our schedule for April is as follows:
Monday, April 9 & 23 and beginning April 30 we will switch to our regular schedule: every Monday evening.
All meetings take place at the Thistle Dew Theatre at 7:00p.
Beginning May 6 and the first Sunday of every month,
at 1:00pm, you are invited to participate in our Readers Theatre of Original Plays.
Not only can you volunteer to read as a character in an original play but you will be invited by the playwrights to critique their work.
Admission is $5.00, which always includes a choice of decadent desserts, coffee and tea.
If you volunteer to be a reader... there is no admission charge and you still get to enjoy the dessert.
APRIL 15 PLAYWRIGHTS COLLABORATIVE MEETING AT THE CALIFORNIA STAGE THEATRE:
At the Sunday, April 15, Playwrights Collaborative Meeting (7:00 PM) we will read and discuss John Ousley's "Stillwater," a play told through the eyes of Bill, a single father in Stillwater, Oklahoma raising his daughter Grace. When confronted by his former wife Maria, for the first time in fifteen years, Bill is forced to face his demons and to let his daughter find out the truth of his past.
Also, Joshua Laskey will discuss his recent experience self producing his play "Put Out: An Adulterated Farce".
This workshop is at the California Stage Theatre, 2509 "R" Street (on "R" Street between 25th and 26th Streets), Sacramento.
The Playwrights Collaborative thanks the California Stage Theater Company for the use of its theater.
For further information or if you have a play you would like workshopped, contact Gary Agid, chairman, at gary@agid.com (916-383-9267).
Workshops are monthly (or occasionally twice monthly) on Sundays on dates to be announced. There are no dues, fees or other charges for participating. Staged readings may be scheduled occasionally by playwrights."The Playwrights Collaborative is an organization of writers, actors, directors and others interested in the theater, working together to promote the development and production of new plays in Sacramento and elsewhere. Through a cooperative process of peer review, Playwrights Collaborative assists in making plays ready for production and helps in finding suitable venues where shows might be performed."
At each workshop, original plays by local writers are read and discussed as are ways to promote deserving works for production. Several theaters have expressed an interest in producing one new original play per year and Playwrights Collaborative has encouraged similar interest by other theatres in the area. There will also be occasional speakers with expertise in various aspects of theater.
Playwrights participating in the Sunday workshops will be scheduling occasional "staged readings" of plays that have been developed sufficiently to be ready for production. A staged reading is a play production with the actors holding scripts.
Playwrights Collaborative invites interested writers and actors to attend and take part in the workshop readings which can lead to invitational staged readings of new works. The group actively promotes new plays to prospective producers. Following each reading, comments and suggestions for improvement will be solicited from all who are present.
The Playwrights Collaborative does not share its e-mail list information with anyone.
