Student Blog: 8 Tips for Incoming Freshman

I have almost survived my first year at NYU, and if you're reading this as an incoming freshman, here are some tips that might help you ease into your first year of college.

1. It's okay to say no.

My biggest mistake the first month of college was saying yes to every hang out, extra activity, late night, etc. Which led me to be exhausted, and get very ill. I was nervous about making friends, so I didn't want to say no to any hang out. I promise you, you can say no to a plan without losing any friends. Getting extra rest is just as important. Your friends will understand, and if they don't, maybe they aren't worth your time anyway...

2. Use your meal plan!

USE YOUR MEAL PLAN! I love eating out as much as anybody else, however you have a plan so might as well use it. Every swipe you don't use is money wasted. I know dining hall food can totally suck sometimes but you don't want to get to the last few weeks of the semester and have 100 unused meal swipes. Trust me.

3. You don't need a Brita.

This might be controversial, but I had a mini fridge and my Brita filter took up the entirety of the space. It ended up being more of a hassle than a help. I would have to go to the water fountain to fill it up anyway so I switched over to just filling up my water bottles. This saved a bunch of space and was just as convenient.

4. Get involved.

Getting involved in your school's community is a great way to make friends and explore your interests. Whether this means joining a club, going to events your RA or school planned, I think it's a great way to network and get connected with your peers. And who knows maybe you will find a lifelong friend.

5. Find friends outside of your major.

Yes, making friends with people in your major is great, you will have similar interests and probably are in a lot of the same classes. I think it's also extremely beneficial to befriend people with different interests, maybe they can introduce you to a new hobby!

6. Take advantage of the free opportunities your school provides.

Take the free merch, food, show/sports tickets, ANYTHING.

7. Less is more.

Do not bring your whole closet, and every stuffed animal and blanket for your dorm. Having less keeps your dorm clean, which I'm sure your future roommate will appreciate. Bring the necessities!

8. Everything will work out.

I know this sounds crazy but I swear to you everything will work out. Don't spend too much time stressing about the unknown. The universe is on your side and everything happens for a reason.

Good luck incoming freshman, may the odds be ever in your favor!
