Providence, RI (February 21,2018) – Mutiny Theatre Project ends its season in a big way, our first musical: DOGFIGHT THE MUSICAL. Pasek and Paul, the creators of La La Land, and Dear Evan Hanson, who have been dubbed the Rogers and Hammerstein of this generation, interweave poignant historical narrative and lyrical storytelling in the acclaimed 2012 Off- Broadway musical starring Lindsay Mendez and Derek Klena.
Dogfight, which is based off the 1991 film starring River Phoenix and Lili Taylor, tells the story of “a group of young marines gathered in San Fransisco the night before they ship off to Vietnam. They decide to celebrate their last night of freedom with a cruel game they call a “dogfight” where every man sets out to find the ugliest girl he can and brings her to a party. Everyone puts in money, and the man with the ugliest date wins the pot. One of the young men taking part is Eddie Birdlace (Steven Sawan), who is running out of time to find a date when he meets idealistic waitress Rose Fenny (Joey Macari) in a diner. He invites her to the party—her very first party—and she accepts. She leaves angrily when she finds out about the bet and Eddie, feeling bad, comes to find her. After an inauspicious beginning, an awkward love story begins to unfold.” – Broadway.com
Mutiny Theatre Project is excited to bring Dogfight to life with a fresh and innovative interpretation. The audience will be fully immersed in this memory play, as the action happens from multiple angles throughout the theatre. Ultimately, it will be a continued exploration of our aesthetic that places an emphasis on acting, character development, and storytelling while stripping away anything extraneous.
