RITAC to Host 'Artists Working in Healthcare' at Gamm Theatre, 5/31

The Rhode Island Teaching Artists Center (RITAC) invites teaching artists, medical professionals, administrators, educators and the general public to attend "Artists Working in Healthcare" on Saturday May 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The half-day event, which is free to RITAC members and just $10 for non-members will explore the history, practices and benefits of integrating the arts and healthcare. The event will take place at RITAC, which is housed at The Gamm Theatre, 172 Exchange St., Pawtucket, RI.

"Artists Working in Healthcare" explores such topics as: What is the role of an artist working in healthcare? What healing arts programs already exist and what are their benefits? How can one get involved in this evolving field? Keynote Speakers include:

Elaine Sims, Director of the Gifts of Art program for the University of Michigan Health System. The program has been recognized as a model program by the National Endowment of the Arts. Sims' artwork has appeared in The New Yorker magazine and museums around the world. Learn more about Elaine>

Paula Most, Coordinator for the Arts at Lifespan in Providence, RI. Most is founder & director of Museum on Rounds, a hospital based art program that began as a collaboration with The Museum of Art, RISD and continues to this day to bring art workshops to children at Hasbro Children's Hospital. Panelists include: Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts, State of Rhode Island; Rachel Balaban, Co-Founder & Co-Director, Artists and Scientists as Partners; Jordan Butterfield, Education Programs Manager & Teaching Artist, Trinity Rep; Dr. Colleen Cavanaugh, Artistic Director & Founder, Part of the Oath; Hollis Mickey, Assistant Educator, Gallery Interpretation, RISD Museum; John Peterson, Business Manager for Behavioral Health, Bradley Hospital
