2009 RIIFF AT CCA

Thursday August 6TH 7:00 pm:

ART & COPY (86 minutes) Directed by Doug Pray. This illuminating documentary looks at the creative contemporary advertisers who have shaped our lives with their compelling messages that convince us to buy products we didn't know we needed. From the "Creative Revolution" of the mid-1960s to the present day, campaigns such as Dan Wieden's "Just Do It," Hal Riney's political ads for Reagan, and Mary Wells Lawrence's "I Love NY" explore the revolutionary spirit these individuals brought to the ad industry, resulting in an inspiring synthesis of art, commerce and human emotion that has touched all our lives. ABUELO (Grandfather)(15 m.) Dir. by Mary Ann Kellogg. Following the death of her mother, 12 year old Emily is visited by her Argentinean grandfather who opens her eyes to the world of tango.

THE VICIOUS KIND (92 m.) Dir. by Lee Krieger. Recently scorned, lovelorn Caleb picks up his brother Peter from college and brings him, and his new girlfriend Emma, home for Thanksgiving. Despite Caleb's current disdain for women, he becomes infatuated with Emma and must decide whether to act on his feelings or protect his brother's first love. THE STARS DON'T TWINKLE IN OUTER SPACE (10 m.)Dir. by Peter Thwaites. From the U.K. A 1940's space adventure story in which two children struggle to escape their doom.

FLAT LOVE (15 m.) Dir. by Andres Sanz. From Spain. A man, convinced that the world is flat, falls in love with a two-dimensional woman at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. THE LAST MOMENTS OF LEOPOLDO BERENGUER (10 m.) Dir. by Jaime Dezcallar. From Spain. A story of magical realism in which Leopoldo refuses to see how close he is to losing everything he has. LOCKER 13: DOWN & OUT (15 m.) Dir. by Matthew Mebane. Tommy Novak is an aging boxer in the twilight of his career who wants nothing more than to go out with a win when a mysterious old janitor gives him that chance. NOOR (25 m.) Dir. by Razan Ghalayini. From Jordan. Noor's birthday plans take a turn when she and her mother musts deal with a curfew imposed by the Israeli Defense Forces.

58 HARRISON LANE (40 m.) Dir. by Sprague Theobald. This documentary takes an intimate look at Connecticut's Woodhall School for adolescent boys who, due to various emotional barriers or learning disabilities, have fallen into lives of isolation and hopelessness. The film looks at the sometimes dark places these boys have been, the unique teaching methods employed by the school, and the great breakthroughs and successes that can be achieved.
