But the rude truth of the Tampa gag is always right there, an albatross we can’t seem to shake. If someone as sheltered as Maizy thinks Tampa is a cosmopolitan city, the audience knows it is not. In the show’s context, Tampa is not somewhere a serious person might turn, but rather, a gaudy hotbed of criminals, eccentrics and opportunists.
