In the musical version, presented locally by Broadway Dallas as part of the show’s North American tour, Sugar and bandleader Sweet Sue are Black, Lemmon’s character Jerry/Daphne is played by a nonbinary actor, and Daphne’s would-be lover Osgood is Mexican American.

They provide a large share of the comedy as they suffer through the afflictions imposed upon them.
