The Abduction from the Seraglio serves as the culminating event of the 2026 Bard Music Festival, "Mozart and His World," presented as a semi-staged concert performance at the Sosnoff Theater. Mozart composed this opera in 1782 at the commission of Habsburg Emperor Joseph II, and its premiere marked the composer's first major breakthrough in Vienna. Set in 18th-century Turkey, the work follows a Spanish nobleman's efforts to rescue his kidnapped fiancée from a pasha's harem, weaving together themes of love, ingenuity, and Enlightenment ideals of mercy and virtue. Leon Botstein conducts the American Symphony Orchestra and Bard Festival Chorale in this performance.
