THE HOBBIT Will Come to Raleigh Little Theatre's Outdoor Amphitheatre
Bilbo Baggins' epic journey comes to life at Raleigh Little Theatre's scenic outdoor stage
This spring, Raleigh Little Theatre invites audiences of all ages to journey to Middle-earth with its enchanting outdoor production of The Hobbit, running May 2-10 in the Louise “Scottie” Stephenson Amphitheatre and directed by Flora Bare.
Adapted by Edward Mast and based on the beloved novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit follows Bilbo Baggins, a comfort-loving Hobbit who is unexpectedly swept into an epic quest. Recruited as a “burglar” by the wizard Gandalf, Bilbo sets off on an adventure filled with dwarves, danger, and discovery - all in pursuit of a long-lost treasure. Along the way, he uncovers courage he never knew he had and finds that the greatest rewards aren't always gold.
Performances run May 2-10, 2026.
Performed on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, this 60-minute adaptation is the perfect family-friendly theatrical outing. Audiences are encouraged to pack a picnic, explore the adjacent Raleigh Rose Garden in full bloom, and enjoy a magical afternoon of storytelling under the open sky.
“This production of The Hobbit invites you into a world of theatrical wonder, where we invite people of all ages to come together with us on an epic journey across Middle-earth,” says director Flora Bare. “As Bilbo Baggins leaves his cozy home, he and the Dwarves overcome many obstacles to discover that true magic lies in friendship and shared adventure.” Set against the natural beauty of RLT's historic outdoor amphitheatre, The Hobbit offers a unique and immersive theatre experience that celebrates imagination, community, and the joy of live performance.
The Hobbit is produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Illinois. It is funded in part by the City of Raleigh based on recommendations of the Raleigh Arts Commission. The production is supported by United Arts Wake County, as well as the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
