Burning Coal Theatre Company's Lobby Lecture Continues

Burning Coal Theatre Company's 2009/2010 Lobby Lecturers Series continues with Dr. Maureen Quilligan, Duke University R. Florence Brinkley Professor of English. Dr. Quilligan will speak on "the Depiction of Women in Renaissance Literature" at 6:15 pm on Saturday, December 12, 2010 prior to Burning Coal Theatre Company's performance of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING by William Shakespeare. Tickets to the lecture are $5, or free to anyone holding a ticket to any performance of Burning Coal's MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. ABOUT DR. MAUREEN QUILLIGAN

Maureen Quilligan, who holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University, has as a priMary Field of interest in the Renaissance, with special attention to women and literature. She has published four books: The Language of Allegory: Defining the Genre (1979) Milton's Spenser: The Politics of Reading (1983), The Allegory of Female Authority: Christine de Pizan's Cite des Dames (1991) and Incest and Agency in Elizabeth's England (2005). She has also co-edited three volumes of essays titled Rewriting the Renaissance: The Discourses of Sexual Difference in Early Modern Europe (1986) and Subject and Object in Renaissance Culture(1996) and Rereading the Black Legend: the Discourses of Racial Difference in the Renaissance Empires (2008). Among other fellowships she has held a Guggenheim and an ACLS and was awarded the Sidonie Clauss Prize for Distinguished Teaching in the Humanities at Yale (1983) as well as the Undergraduate Advisory Board Teaching Prize at the University of Pennsylvania (1997). She is at work on two current projects: female political authority in the sixteenth century, and slavery in the Renaissance epic.

Burning Coal Theatre Company is one of Raleigh's small, professional theatre companies. Burning Coal is an incorporated, non-profit [501 (c) (3)] organization. Burning Coal's mission is to produce literate, visceral, affecting theatre that is experienced, not simply seen. Burning Coal produces explosive reexaminations of overlooked classic and modern plays, as well as new plays, whose themes and issues are of immediate concern to our audience, using the best local, national and International Artists available. We work toward a theatre of high-energy performances and minimalist production values. The emphasis is on literate works that are felt and experienced viscerally, unlike more traditional linear plays, at which audiences are most often asked to observe without participating.
