Burning Coal Theater Offers Summer Theater Conservatory Jr Session 6/15-26

Summer is coming, and with it Burning Coal's Summer Theatre Conservatory. This year our Junior session for students grades 6-8 begins June 15th and runs through June 26th, with a showcase performance on the evening of the 26th.

The conservatory is taught by Burning Coal Director of Education Ian Finley (author of 1960), and is an excellent way to introduce students to the power of performance. Classes focus on the full range of theatrical skills, including acting, directing, and playwriting, and culminate with a workshop performance of an original, student-created play. The conservatory runs from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, weekdays, June

15 - 26. The program fee is $245.

Our Senior camp, for rising freshmen in high school to rising freshmen in college runs July 6 - 24, 2009, with a showcase performance of Shakespeare's RICHARD III on the evening of the 24th.

Also led by Finley, this 6 hour per day, 5 day per week intensive conservatory features guest directors from the best college theatre programs across the state, such as John Gulley (UNCG), Kirby Wahl (Elon) and some of the best professional theatre artists from across the state, such Preston Lane (Triad Stage) and others. The conservatory runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, July 6 - 24, 2009. The fee is $395.

FREE TICKETS TO ‘1960' AND A LOBBY LECTURE

Burning Coal Theatre Company has thirty (30) free tickets to its current production of 1960 on Saturday, April 25. In order to claim the free tickets, you must:

1. Attend the Lobby Lecture with professor Blaire Kelley of NCSU's history department beginning at 6:15 p.m.; and

2. Attend the performance of 1960 on Saturday, April 25th beginning at 7:30 p.m.; and

3. Email in advance to this email address to reserve your tickets: burning_coal@ipass.net.

Only those who attend the Lobby Lecture are eligible for the free tickets, which will be given out on a first come, first served basis based upon timestamp of your email request.

This project is made possible in part by the North Carolina Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The Oakwood Garden Club is hosting its 20th Annual Garden Tour and Tea May 2 and 3, 2009, offering two traditional Victorian Tea seatings in the garden at the historic Upchurch-Stronach House followed by a Naturalist Guided Garden Tour.

Attendees will be treated to a customary menu of tea sandwiches, cakes, hors d'oeuvres and refreshing beverages at the Stronach house, a neighborhood landmark boasting 100 year-old roses, 1890s Queen Anne architectural elements and staiNed Glass rose windows. For many years the garden at the Stronach house was lovingly planted and tended by the late Harvey Bumgardner, an internationally renowned rosarian and former rose curator at the J. C. Raulston Arboretum.

After the Tea, guests will be treated to a guidEd Stroll through Historic Oakwood, where they will tour some of the most notable and lush gardens in Raleigh, view architectural features from some of the neighborhood's most beautiful homes, and learn creative gardening ideas for annuals and perennials, garden paths and plants for sunny and shady gardens.

Seatings are at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm each day and last an hour and a half. The Stronach House is located at 414 N. Bloodworth Street. Guests are encouraged to dress up and wear comfortable shoes for walking!
