Auditions For Burning Coal Theater's 2009/2010 Season Held 6/20 In Raleigh

Burning Coal Theatre Company will hold auditions for its 2009/2010 season (detailed below) on Saturday, June 20th from 11 am to 6 pm at Meymandi Theatre at the Murphey School, 224 Polk Street, Raleigh. To book an audition slot, please call 919-834-4001 or email burning_coal@ipass.net. Actors should prepare two one-minute monologues, one Shakespeare and one contemporary, along with sheet music for a short selection from a pop song (pianist will be provided), and three copies of their picture/resume (if available). Actors of all types should audition.

Burning Coal Theatre Company announces its 2009/2010 season in Raleigh, North Carolina. The season will begin with the rock musical Hair by Ragni, Rado and McDermott, directed by Mark Sutch of Davidson College. Choreography will be by Robin Harris, head of the dance program at NCSU. Music director will be Bradley Gardner of Campbell University. The production will run September 10 - 27, 2009 at Meymandi Theatre at the Murphey School, 224 Polk Street, Raleigh.

William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing will follow, directed by Emily Tilson Ranii, December 3 - 20, 2009. Shakespeare's romantic comedy tells the story of the warring couple, Beatrice and Benedict, who are perfectly matched - and loath each other!

Burning Coal will then present the North Carolina premiere of The Seafarer by Conor McPherson, directed by Burning Coal's artistic director, Jerome Davis, February 4 - 21, 2010. The play deals with a small group of wayward Dublin men who meet on Christmas Eve for their weekly poker night. On this night, one of them has invited an outsider, who turns out to be a most unexpected guest.

In April, we will present the world premiere of Winston-Salem playwright Angus McLachlan's S.E.C.C.A. ("Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art"), directed by Kathryn Milliken, about a young writer living in a small southern city and trying to juggle his relationship with two very strong women in his life. This play will be presented April 15, 17, 23, 25, 29 and May 1st. It will run in repertory with Gee's Bend by Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder, directed by Marc Williams. This play concerns a rural, secluded African American community in Alabama who discovered a capacity to create remarkable quilts, and in doing so found their place in the world. Gee's Bend will play April 16, 18, 22, 24, 30 and May 2nd.

2009/2010 mainstage season performances are Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2 pm. Tickets are $20 or $15 for students, seniors (65+) and active military and may be purchased at www.burningcoal.org or 919-834-4001.

Burning Coal's Wait ‘Til You See This second stage season will include

Flee This Place by Johannah Maynard, directed by Sylvia Mallory, October 8 - 18 (exclusively of Saturday, October 10) at Meymandi Theatre at the Murphey School. This world premiere explodes two ancient stories, that of Antigone and Medea, to create a new work about violence in our culture.

Limbo by Declan Feenan, directed by Joshua Benjamin, will be presented, in its American premiere, March 11 - 21, 2010. This one-woman show details the story of a young woman, on the cusp of adulthood, who places her faith in someone who may or may not be worthy of it, and lives to tell the tale.
