Estreou em 1995, no National Theatre, em Londres, tornando-se rapidamente numa das mais bem-sucedidas peças de David Hare, com sucessivas produções ao longo dos anos, nomeadamente na Broadway.
A história passa-se numa noite fria. A jovem professora Clara, que vive num modesto apartamento num subúrbio da capital, recebe a visita inesperada de Tomás, um carismático e bem-sucedido empresário, cuja mulher faleceu recentemente.
À medida que a noite avança, os dois tentam perceber porque é que o seu relacionamento, outrora apaixonado, terminou abruptamente. Clara e Tomás acabam por se envolver numa perigosa batalha de ideologias opostas e de desejos recíprocos.
