He doesn't know where he got it,
that fiery frog inside him,
the rebel devil burning him up,
cause he can't recognize the punk-rock soul
inside this society-matron shell.
- Gertrude, God Save Gertrude

God Save Gertrude
by Deborah Stein

Directed by Valory J. Lawrence
Starring LisaMarie Harrison
and her real-life son, David Cole as well as
Brooke Markham and Drew Barrios

A rock concert with characters, God Save Gertrude is a punk rock riff on Hamlet in which Queen Gertrude is transplanted to a war-torn country a little like Russia and a bit like our own. As the bombs rain down and her coked-up son sells out to MTV, Gertrude sings about her many men and her many mistakes, hoping to incite one more riot before she goes.

Hamlet by William Shakespeare

January 15-February 20 @ CoHo Theater

With this brisk, exciting new cut, the play focuses on the familial themes of Hamlet. The trimming shortens the overall play and gives a sharp focus to the plot lines that directly tell the story. With a company of five actors and minimal tech, this is Hamlet in its essence. Without excessive technical distractions or out-of-context ideals (post-Apocalypse, No, thank you!), this version of Hamlet will remind you why you fell in love with this play in the first place.
