University of Pittsburgh Repertory Theatre Closes SCAPIN 2/14

A classic play gets a Hollywood twist as the University of Pittsburgh Repertory Theatre presents Moliere's comedy Scapin. Final performance is scheduled for February 14, 2010.

With an updated text by Bill Irwin and Mark O'Donnell and direction from Holly Thuma, Scapin has the look and spirit of slapstick movie comedies of the 1930's.

The result is a madcap romp complete with Keystone Cops and plenty of physical comedy.
Scapin explores the paths of four star-crossed lovers. Since the path of true love never does run smoothly, it is up to the faithful servant Scapin to use an endless supply of disguises and tricks to untangle all the confusion.

Playing the title role of Scapin will be commedia dell-arte star Gale McNeeley.
McNeeley served as a Richard Rauh teaching artist in the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Pittsburgh during the fall term. His long list of credentials includes performances at the Brooklyn Academy Theatre, New York Shakespeare Festival, and San Diego Rep.

According to director Thuma, "Working on this production gives the students an opportunity to apply the skills they practiced in Commedia and Clown classes with Gale McNeeley. The goal is to have as much fun as humanly possible, and then share it with an audience"
In addition to his work in commedia, McNeeley has also had extensive training in clowning, pantomime, and juggling-all of which will come into play in Scapin.

Commedia dell-arte is a form of improvisational theatre that began in Italy in the 16th century. Performances were mostly unscripted, held outside, used few props, and relied heavily on physical slapstick comedy. This theatrical form influenced a number of great playwrights, including Shakespeare as well as Moliere, the author of Scapin.
Joining McNeely will be Mark Epstein, also on the faculty of the Department of Theatre Arts.

Students cast in the show include Chris White, Alex Stewart, Celina Mauti, Colleen McCarthy, Jim Moore, Fred Pelzer, Sheleah Harris, Andrea Gordon, Elise D'Avella, Renana Fox, Jeff Moulton, Elizabeth Murphy, and Matt Russak. Music will be provided by Eric Markley and Ted Zellers.

Scapin will be performed in the Studio Theatre in the basement of The cathedral of Learning. Seating is limited and reservations are strongly recommended.
