Following its sold-out Hot Metal Musicals, the inaugural showcase of new musical theatre work, MTAP -- Musical Theatre Artists of Pittsburgh announces its new project, the Hot Metal Musicals Incubator. The Incubator is aimed at helping creative teams move their work forward by putting it in front of an audience. MTAP is therefore looking for new unproduced musicals, either fully or substantially written and scored, to be considered for the program.

Interested writers and writer/composer teams are invited to contact MTAPgh@gmail.com for an application form and more details.

The Incubator allows a public audience to become involved in the early stages of a new musical's long and often arduous journey toward full production. Creative teams benefit by working with a director and music director, along with the artistic and production team. The collaboration often helps to illuminate or clarify the storytelling or song intention as the team prepares the work for presentation. Three Incubator workshops will take place in 2016 and the public submission period begins January 4, 2016. Musicals submitted by Pittsburgh region artists will be considered on a rolling basis throughout 2016. MTAP is eager to connect with local artists working in any style, so long as story, character, lyrics and music are central to the work.

There is no fee to submit work and artists new to MTAP are encouraged to apply. MTAP's monthly meetings are open to any interested parties whether members or not. More information is available at MTAP's website: MTAP.weebly.com.

The Incubator was launched in July, 2015, with an encore presentation from Dear Boy by members Jeanne Drennan (book and lyrics) and David Berlin (music), followed in November with a reading of Kitty, with book by John Keating and music and lyrics by Sandra Lowell. In getting work in front of an audience, these workshops build on the success of the winter showcase, Hot Metal Musicals. That success was underscored recently by the announcement that Murphy's Law, a new musical by Andy Nagraj and Jonathan Spivey, will be produced May 13-15, 2016, by the Strand Theater in Zelienople. The Strand's producers first learned about Murphy's Law after hearing its song "Maybe One Day" in Hot Metal Musicals.

MTAP welcomes new members, including performing talent, bookwriters, librettists, lyricists, composers, musicians, managers and producers. Visit MTAP.weebly.com or email MTAPgh@gmail.com for more information about how to get involved.

MTAP -- Musical Theatre Artists of Pittsburgh is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit service organization, and has garnered support from individual donors and grantmaking entities including The Heinz Endowments Small Arts Initiative Program. The Heinz Endowments supports efforts to make southwestern Pennsylvania a premier place to live and work, a center for learning and educational excellence, and a region that embraces diversity and inclusion. Contributions for the charitable purposes of MTAP must be made payable to Fractured Atlas only and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
