Theater Works' PuppetWorks Season Kicks Off with SEA OF IMAGINATION Today

By:
Theater Works is reinventing the way we think of puppet shows with this season of PuppetWorks. Each production will be performed in the black light style of puppetry causing the puppets, scenery and even the audience to glow. The first production to present this dynamic art form is "Sea of Imagination" taking place today, August 22, August 29 and September 5 with performances at 10:30 am and 12 pm at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts.

Sea of Imagination is the story of Sammy the star who falls from the sky and lands far under the sea where he discovers that home is where the heart is during his underwater adventures. The entire production is performed under black lights in the McMillin black box theater, creating a glow-in-the-dark experience where puppets, set and even the audience members glow. Black light puppetry is derived from the "Czech Black" style of puppetry famous in Prague. Education and Youth Programming Director Chris Hamby recently studied with the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia for three weeks, the company is world famous for their black light puppetry, and further developed the concept into the Theater Works Puppet Works productions.

Each 40-minute show includes a post-show tutorial on the puppets used in the show and a brief overview of puppetry manipulation. After the show there is an option for a make and take workshop where audience members can make their own simple puppet to take home with them.. Productions are geared towards audience members ages 3-8, but are enjoyed by all.

Sea of Imagination is the first in the 2015-16 Theater Works Puppet Works season that showcases the new production style. Boo! A Halloween Spooktacular is the next production taking place October 7, 24 and 31, followed by Secret of the Rainforest which takes the stage April 2, 9 and 16.

Tickets for Sea of Imagination are now on sale. General admission tickets are just $7. The production takes place in the McMillin Theater of the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts (8355 West Peoria Avenue, Peoria, AZ 85345).
