Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts Presents Pilobolus, 10/21 & 22

By:

Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will present Pilobolus on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22, at 8 p.m. in the Virginia G. Piper Theater.

Tickets are available for $49 and $59 online at www.ScottsdalePerformingArts.org or through the Patron Services Box Office at (480) 499-TKTS (8587).

Named after a sun-loving fungus that grows in barnyards and pastures, Pilobolus began in 1971 as an outsider dance company and quickly became renowned the world over for its imaginative and athletic exploration of creative collaboration. Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, this unique American company has created one of the most popular and varied bodies of work in the history of dance and continues to thrill audiences with its gravity-defying performances of extreme balance, contortion and illusion.

Based in Washington Depot, Conn., Pilobolus tours internationally, performing on stage and television, and has earned numerous awards. The company also is known for its groundbreaking collaborations with an eclectic variety of individuals and organizations, including author Maurice Sendak, puppet master Basil Twist, SpongeBob SquarePants head writer Steven Banks, cartoonist Art Spiegelman, the rock band Ok Go and MIT's Distributed Robotics Lab.

Pilobolus' Scottsdale performance will feature both classic and recent works, including Particle Zoo (1990), a quartet for men with an odd-man-out theme; The Transformation (2009), a shadow piece in which a young woman is transformed; Duet (1992), an exploration of themes of intimacy, misunderstanding and union; Rushes (2007), a surrealist animated dream sequence; and Korokoro (2011), one of its newest productions.

This performance is presented with support from The Saguaro. MetLife Foundation is the official tour sponsor of Pilobolus Dance Theatre.
