Black Theatre Troupe Presents BROKE-OLOGY 2/10-26

By:

Broke-ology: It is a complex new science that examines two things. One, being broke, Two, staying alive despite your brokeness. ....

Black Theatre Troupe presents the thoughtful comedy BROKE-OLOGY by Nathan Louis Jackson, February 10 - 26, 2017. The production is directed by Anthony Runfola and stars Christopher Dozier, Rapheal Hamilton, Melvina Jones and Mike Traylor.

The story surrounds the King family, who has weathered life's hardships and survived with their love for each other intact. William King lives in the house his two sons grew up in. His health is failing and he's alone, but he maintains his allegiance with their mother in his own way. When the brothers are called home to take care of him, they find themselves strangely at odds.

Nathan Louis Jackson, who draws his inspiration from his childhood in a struggling Kansas City neighborhood, described the the play in an interview for the Juilliard Journal as "... a little bit of fiction mixed with real-life things," Like one of his characters in he initially struggled with leaving home to attend college but pushed onward through Kansas State University and on to Juilliard in 2007 where he workshopped Broke-ology. It premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival a year later with rave reviews, subsequently landing on the stages of Lincoln Center.

Jackson's career path as a playwright was initially borne out of necessity. He told American Theatre Magazine "...I realized a long time ago that there's a limited number of monologues specifically for African-American performers," Jackson says. "After you dispense with August Wilson, Raisin in the Sun and a couple of others, you're kind of scraping. I was like, 'If I'm going to perform, I'm going to write my own stuff."
