6th Annual Young Playwrights Festival Set for Prescott Center for the Arts

By:

The 6th Annual Young Playwrights Festival is set for Sunday, April 10, at the Prescott Center for the Arts Main Stage Theatre at 208 N. Marina in downtown Prescott. The PCA Theatre opens 30 minutes prior to the start of each show.

The 2016 festival play selections showcase all genres: comedies, dark comedies, fantasies, light dramas and message dramas. This year's playwrights represent students in grades 5 to 12 from Prescott, Prescott Valley and Chino Valley.

More than 50 plays were submitted to be judged and juried competition, which is open to students in grades K-12 from throughout Arizona. Selected plays are paired with PCA directors who work with the young playwrights to take the selected works through the entire page to stage process: open cast auditions, rehearsals, and the performances before a live festival audience.

The Young Playwrights Festival is an educational outreach program that promotes literacy and theatre appreciation. Winning playwrights are awarded scholarships and trophies for first, second and third place. The closing awards ceremony follows the 6 pm performance and includes the presentation of the Tiffany Antone Grand Prize selected by a panel of judges at the 6 pm show and the Audience Choice Award selected from ballots cast by audience members from both the 2 pm and 6 pm performances.

The 2016 Young Playwrights Festival First Place Winner is "The Bear and the Hummingbird" by Jasmine Jeffries, the Second Place Winner is "The Chamomile Catastrophe" by Alex DuBroy, and the Third Place Winner is "Teenager Syndrome" by Hannah Valley. The festival is supported through generous donations from Ghost Talk, Prescott Parents Magazine, APS, the Jewish Community Foundation, and PCA Season Sponsors Jim and Sharon Carlin and Frank and Cathy Hahn.
