The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Tanghalang Pilipino will present bilingual performances of Tennessee Williams' 1947 Pulitzer Prize-winning play A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE starting October 9th ‘til the 25th at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino, CCP Complex, Manila.  The play will be in English and Filipino, translated by Filipino playwright Orlando Nadres as FLORES PARA LOS MUERTOS.

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE opened on Broadway on December 3, 1947 and ran for two years at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. Perhaps Williams' greatest masterpiece, the play explores the Culture Clash between the lead characters Blanche DuBois, a pretentious, homeless, fading belle of the American South, and Stanley Kowalski, a working class auto-parts salesman.  The material’s recurring theme tackles the constant, and often dangerous conflict between reality and fantasy, the actual and ideal.

Multi-awarded television, film and stage director Floy Quintos directs his cast that includes Ana Abad Santos (Bare, Dogeaters) as DuBois in the English version and Eula Valdes (Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah) as DuBois in the Filipino version.  Reuben Uy (in the English version) and Neil Ryan Sese (in the Filipino version) play the lead male character of Kowalski, the role made famous by Marlon Brando in the original stage production, and the film production in 1951.

Seasoned Filipino stage actress Mailes Kanapi (in the English version) and theater newcomer Meryll Soriano (in the Filipino version) essay the role of Kowalski’s wife Stella.  Also included in the cast are Paolo O’Hara, Jonathan Tadioan, Marjorie Lorico, Paolo Cabañero, Jerald Napoles, and Tara Cabaero.

The staging of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE/FLORES PARA LOS MUERTOS is part of CCP Tanghalang Pilipino's 23rd Theatre Season celebrating "Women of Substance" as theme.

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE/FLORES PARA LOS MUERTOS will be performed in English from October 9 to 11, 2009 and in Filipino from October 16 to 25, 2009; Fridays at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays at 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. Special shows are available upon reservation.
