This Silent Music is an interdisciplinary world premiere performance created specifically for Philadelphia's James Turrell Skyspace, inaugurating a new ritual of collective listening through music, architecture, and community. The program features three world premiere commissions: At the End of It All by LJ White incorporating sonified black hole data, performed by sopranos Katy Avery and Liz Lang with percussionist Darren Lin; a song cycle titled This Silent Music by Lebanese composer Alex Wakim with poetry by George Abud, melding Arabic tonality with Western techniques, performed by Liz Lang, Darren Lin, and oud player Harvey Valdes; and Eucalyptus by Hawaiian-based Mieke Doezema with poetry by Jonathan Sypert, confronting ecological loss through natural soundscapes, performed by Katy Avery and Darren Lin. As daylight fades into dusk, the changing sky becomes an active element of the performance, with the works featuring marimba, glassy auxiliary percussion, and oud in place of traditional piano.
