Tune Up Philly 3rd Annual Festival Concert Set for Saturday, May 18
The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra organization's (PYO) Tune Up Philly will hold its 3rd Annual Festival Concert on Saturday, May 18th at 1:00 p.m. at The Free Library of Philadelphia, Central Branch. More than 100 elementary school students from North Philadelphia will perform a selection of songs in small ensembles and as a full orchestra under the direction of Tune Up Philly Director, Delia Raab-Snyder and special guests from the Salvation Army Kroc Center and Settlement Music School. The concert is free and open to the public; a goodwill offering will be accepted at the door.
This concert is the culmination of a year-long partnership between The Free Library and Tune Up Philly; throughout the 2012/2013 school year, students in Tune Up Philly performed at every Library branch in North Philadelphia, offering free concerts to their community.
PYO's Tune Up Philly is inspired by Venezuela's El Sistema and is designed to nurture economically disadvantaged children through weekday, out-of-school hours, classical musical instruction. Many of the students in Tune Up Philly had never played with a music instrument before joining the program. It commenced in 2010 and began operating at the People for People Charter School in North Philadelphia in 2011. Instructed by eight, professional, teachers and musicians, the students in PYO's Tune Up Philly train five days a week during the school year, with concentrations in woodwind, brass, strings and general music education. Tune Up Philly opened its second location with 40 new students in February 2013 in partnership with EducationWorks and The Village of Arts and Humanities at EducationWorks' Hartranft.
