The State Theatre Center for the Arts announces Scholarships & Community Awards for the 2009 FREDDY© Awards program.

New for 2009 is a $20,000 scholarship to the Muhlenburg College Department of Theatre & Dance. This is in addition to the $20,000 Scholarship that DeSales University Theatre Department has been offering since 2003.

The State Theatre FREDDY© Awards program recognizing and rewarding exceptional accomplishments in the production and performance of musical theater in high schools in Lehigh and Northampton Counties, Pennsylvania, and Warren County, New Jersey. The 2009 program will feature 29 schools, the highest number of participating schools since the FREDDYs were launched in 2003.

Nominations for 2009 will be announced live on WFMZ Channel 69 Noon News on Thursday, May 7th.

The 2009 FREDDY© Awards program will culminate in a 3-hour television awards ceremony on Thursday, May 21 from the State Theatre. Produced in partnership with WFMZ Channel 69, the show will be broadcast live from 7 PM - 10 PM on WFMZ and on the web at www.wfmz.com

2009 Scholarships & Community Awards and Community Awards

DESALES UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP - $5,000 scholarship per year for 4 years (offered since 2003)
MUHLENBERG COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP - $5,000 scholarship per year for 4 years (new for 2009)

EXPRESS-TIMES INTERNSHIP TO ACCOMPANY STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD -paid summer internship to the recipient of the 2009 Student Achievement Award (Internship offered since 2004)


THE ALLENTOWN SWING DANCE SOCIETY - $500 cash award to the school that receives the 2009 FREDDY© for Outstanding Choreography. (given since 2006)

WILSON BLACK TECHNICAL SCHOLARSHIP $500 scholarship for a student in technical theatre (offered since 2005)
KIWANIS TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD - $1,000 to the school that is award the 2009 FREDDY© for Outstanding Stage Crew, to be used towards next year's musical budget. In addition, all other schools nominated in the Outstanding Stage Crew category, will receive a $200 cash award, with any remaining funds being donated directly to the FREDDY© program. (Offered since 2004)

Supporting Kiwanis Clubs for 2009 include: Allentown, Allentown Northeast, Allentown Salisbury, Bethlehem, Easton, Emmaus, Forks, Lt. Governor Kathy Heller, LV Industrial Park, Palmer, Parkland, Phillipsburg NJ, Southern Lehigh, and Washington NJ.

PENNSYLVANIA PLAYHOUSE - $1,000 Cash Award to the recipient of the 2008 FREDDY© for Outstanding Overall Production by a Smaller School. (contributed cash awards since 2005)

MARY V. TURNBACH - $4,000 in cash awards

· $1,000 cash to the school that is awarded the 2009 FREDDY© for Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical (given since 2006)

· $1,000 cash to the school that is awarded the 2009 FREDDY© for Outstanding Performance by an Orchestra

· $500 cash to the school that is awarded the 2009 FREDDY© for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role

· $500 cash to the school that is awarded the 2009 FREDDY© for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role

· $500 cash to the school that is awarded the 2009 FREDDY© for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role

· $500 cash to the school that is awarded the 2009 FREDDY© for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
