Civic Presents Two Films This Weekend: 'Made in Dagenham' & 'The Company Men'

By:

Civic Theatre of Allentown will premiere the film Made in Dagenham on Friday, March 18. The film will screen in Civic's 19th Street Theatre through Thursday, March 24. Made in Dagenham was nominated for Outstanding British Film of the Year at the 2011 BAFTA Awards.

Synopsis: Life for the women of Dagenham, England is tinged with the sounds and sights of the Swinging Sixties, but no one thought the revolution would arrive in their small town. That is until Rita (Sally Hawkins), an employee of Ford Motor Company who primarily sees herself as a wife and mother, is coerced into attending a meeting with union representatives. She and her colleagues become outraged by the lack of respect shown in the meeting to the female employees, so they take on their bosses, and increasingly belligerent local community, and finally their government, daring to stand up and change a system that no one wanted to admit was broken.

Stephen Holden of the New York Times asserts that Made in Dagenham is "So smoothly written and well acted that its humanity and good will leave you with a 1960s buzz of hope that social justice might be at hand." Amy Biancolli of the Houston Chronicle writes that it is "A spirited look - well written, beautifully acted, full of uplift - at lovably cheeky heroines on the march for a little respect."

Civic Theatre of Allentown is proud to offer the best of independent, foreign, art house and documentary cinema to the Lehigh Valley. The schedule for Made in Dagenham is included - it will screen in Civic's 19th Street Theatre.
