Hedgerow Theatre and its Producing Artistic Director Penelope Reed are pleased to announce the upcoming production of George Bernard Shaw's sparkling comedy, Arms and the Man. Jasper Deeter, founder of Hedgerow Theatre Company, was one of the first Americans to champion the works of George Bernard Shaw. We are pleased to bring the great Irish playwright back to the Hedgerow stage March 3-April 5, under the direction of David O'Connor.

Making their Hedgerow Theatre debuts in this production will be Jessica Dal Canton as Raina; Greg Bell as Nicola and Steve Kuhel as Major Sergius Saranoff. They join Hedgerow ensemble members Brian Gallagher (Captain Bluntschli); Betty Lou Roselle (Catherine Petkoff) and Zoran Kovcic (Major Paul Petkoff) and current resident company members Maggie Cogswell (Louka) and Carl Smith (Russian Officer) for this witty and romantic spring comedy.

Hedgerow founder Jasper Deeter launched the Rose Valley theatre on April 21, 1923 with Shaw's Candida. Deeter remained a staunch supporter of Shaw throughout the years, so much so that Hedgerow became internationally known for its advocacy of Shaw's plays, and earned the praise of the great playwright.

Shaw was already a celebrity arts critic and socialist lecturer when he wrote Arms and the Man in 1894. One of Shaw's earliest attempts at writing for the theatre, it was also his first commercial success as a playwright, and has remained a classic ever since. Set during Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885-1886, this play is a satire on the foolishness of glorifying war and basing your affections on idealistic notions of love.

Arms and the Man, part of Hedgerow's Heritage series, plays 8 p.m. Thursday, Fridays; 4 and 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, March 6-April 5. A 1 p.m. Wednesday matinee with a tea party intermission is also offered April 1. Tickets are $12 for children and $20-$30 for adults with $3 discounts for seniors, groups and students. The show previews March 3-4 at 7:30 p.m. and opens with a complimentary meet-the-cast post-show reception March 6. For tickets, call 610-565-4211 or visit www.hedgerowtheatre.org. Hedgerow Theatre is at 64 Rose Valley Road, Rose Valley, PA
