ART OF CIRCUS Swings Its Way To The State Theatre In January
New York based Cirque-tacular Entertainment will present the world premiere of ART OF CIRCUS, a new production that features elite level acrobatics in an intimate setting and draws inspiration from iconic works of visual arts from the last 500 years.
ART OF CIRCUS presents circus through the lens of the visual arts and famous masters throughout time. Individual artists, world famous paintings, and the time and place of a work's creation serve as the context and inspiration for the individual acrobatic, theatrical dance, and circus acts within the show. This unique show will take place at the State Theatre on Friday, January 26, 2018.
Show time is 7:00 PM. Tickets are $33 & $27 and can be purchased by visiting the State Theatre Box Office, 453 Northampton Street, Easton, by calling 1-800-999-STATE, 610-252-3132 or online at www.statetheatre.org. Sponsored by 100.7 WLEV.
Acrobatics, traditional circus, and dance are well represented throughout the visual arts both past and present. Notable examples are displayed in numerous paintings and sketches at prestigious museums by greats such as Picasso, Lautrec, Goya, and Degas, among countless others. The graphic elements of Matisse, Rothko, and Vasarely are natural inspirations for the bold colors and styles of traditional circus and will be the basis of costuming and projections. DaVinci, Mondrian, and Calder offer imagery that is immediately recognizable in New Circus props that acrobats perform on such as Cyr Wheel (Vitruvian Man), Trapeze Squares (Composition with Red, Yellow, and Blue), and Floating Mobile lyras (Red Polygons).
Dance (in the vein of Momix and Pilobolus), body-balancing (with Olympians and World-record holders), and aerial acrobatics are at the heart of the content of our new production. Jazz composer Jesse Elder and 4-time ASCAP Award Winner is the composer and musical director, creating lush arrangements of classical works from the time periods of the individual artists/paintings from the 1400s thru the 1980s. Elder is currently the Musical Director for tours with Postmodern Jukebox. Digital projections, large scale panels, and translucent stained "glass" are utilized throughout, with exquisite costuming and novel circus props serving in lieu of traditional set pieces.
