BWW Review: GET RICH OR HIGH TRYIN' at Regal Theatre
Having sold out shows in Australia, Pakistan, Malaysia and Singapore, British born Rory Lowe has performed more than 300 times since he was nominated for "Best Comedy" at last year's FRINGE WORLD. A great performer and storyteller as well as a comedian, Get Rich or High Tryin' was a laugh a minute show which routinely had the audience in stitches.
Short jokes, longer stories, clever wordplay, dog fucking (not literally of course) this show had it all. Lowe is excellent at reading his audience and he had a lot of fun with them, heckling them about sex and politics before veering into some very funny anecdotes about his own life. From the terrifying and hilarious (in retrospect) day that he nearly got shot by a cop in America, to turning down an offer for an obscene amount of money for sex, each and every one of his personal stories was a wild rollercoaster from start to finish. Particularly hilarious was his story about breaking down 250kms north of Port Hedland on his way to a gig in Broome. The ensuing ride he hitched with a couple of meth heads is one that he (and the audience) are unlikely to ever forget.
Not only is he an excellent wordsmith and vocal mimic (his Australian and New Zealand accents are both particularly good), Lowe is also a great physical comedian. Each time he began acting out the physical parts of his stories the audience were all but falling all over themselves to laugh. Even more delightful was the few times he got so caught up that he succumbed to his own laughter. It's always nice to see a comedian fully embracing a ridiculously funny situation or story with no hang ups. Get Rich or High Tryin' is hilarious, irreverent and a whole lot of fun.
Get Rich or High Tryin' is on at 9:30pm each night at The Regal Theatre in Subiaco as part of the Perth Comedy Festival until the 12th of May. Tickets are available here.
