The American Theatre Wing and the Village Voice just presented the winners of the 60th Annual OBIE Awards. The Public Theater's Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda (including special citations for Andy Blankenbuehler, Thomas Kail, and Alex Lacamoire) received the OBIE Award for Best New American Theatre Work, which is accompanied by a $1,000 check. The Signature Theatre's Founding Artistic Director James Houghton received the OBIE Award for Sustained Achievement. Last Friday, music legend-turned Broadway composer Sting joined 700 primary students from Newcastle ahead of his weekend benefit concerts, where he 'brought the Ship home' at the Sage Gateshead. The students, aged 7 - 12, learned a few of the songs from The Last Ship and performed them as a sing-along with Sting and his band.
THE LAST SHIP played its final performance on Broadway on Saturday, January 24 at 8 p.m. At the conclusion of the show, its composer, and cast member Sting took to the stage to thank the cast, crew and the audience and to reflect on the show's journey. Watch below!
As BroadwayWorld previously reported, Nicole Scherzinger just made her West End stage debut as 'Grizabella' in Andrew Lloyd Webber's record-breaking musical Cats, and according to a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Webber has plans to bring the show (and his new star) to Broadway. He told DM: 'Cats will now definitely go to Broadway again. It's very exciting.' On Scherzinger's future involvement, he added: 'I would very greatly hope she would do it. To do something like that in America would open up a billion doors for her.'He continued: 'She is what you might call an American theatre babe. I do believe she is the most exciting musical theatre artist I have found - well, that I have worked with - in very, very many years. I really do.'
