Today in 2009, The Little Mermaid closed at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, where it ran for 685 performances. The Little Mermaid is based on the animated 1989 Disney film of the same name and the classic story of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen. The musical's book is by Doug Wright, music by Alan Menken and lyrics by the late Howard Ashman (written for the film) and new lyrics by Glenn Slater. Andrew Lloyd Webber: 40 Musical Years gave TV viewers the opportunity to share in the stories behind a range of the award-winning composer and producer's most enduring shows. The 90-minute ITV special, hosted by Michael Ball today, Easter Sunday, featured a star-studded line up performing some of Andrew's best-loved songs, as Andrew reflected on an unbroken run of 40 years of shows in the West End. Earlier this year, the production shattered the house record at The Majestic by having its best weekly gross in its entire 24-year history. Total attendance is now over 15 million and it continues to play with no end in sight. As BroawayWorld previously reported, beginning performances on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, Willemijn Verkaik will make her Broadway debut as Elphaba in the blockbuster musical WICKED. An award-winning actress who has performed the role for more than 1,000 performances in Germany and Holland, Ms. Verkaik will perform the role for a special 15-week engagement. She is currently headlining the Dutch production of WICKED and will play her final performance there on January 11, 2013.

The longest-running show in Broadway history, Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, directed by Harold Prince and produced by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Company, Inc., will once again make theater history when it becomes the first Broadway show ever to celebrate its 25th Anniversary on Saturday, January 26, 2013. Producers today announced an online sweepstakes to give PHANTOM 'Phans' the chance to be part of the historic night's invitation-only performance. While many of the evening's details are being kept under wraps, the special night will begin with an early 6:30 PM performance at The Majestic Theatre (247 West 44th Street), the musical's home for its entire run.

Eden Espinosa, Jane Monheit, Christiane Noll and Scott Alan were supposed to perform Alan's song 'Always' at the 'Broadway Blows Back' concert, raising funds for victims of Hurricane Sandy. The producers decided to move the performance back to December 10th, which Alan was unable to attend, so the group has recorded the song to promote the upcoming concert. 'Sierra has quickly been learning the guitar and I know she loves this song,' Karimloo wrote. 'Figured I could use the banjo practice as always. The West End production of LES MISERABLES welcomed some new cast members last month, including Broadway veteran Sierra Boggess as 'Fantine', as well as 'Over the Rainbow' winner Danielle Hope as 'Eponine.'
