On this day in 2011, the Broadway production of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, celebrated its opening night!

The Lion King - the most successful title in musical theatre history - passes another historic milestone this week, welcoming its 100,000,000th guest worldwide. Since its Broadway premiere on November 13, 1997, 25 productions have played in 100 cities around the world on every continent except Antarctica.

Earlier this week, MCC Theater celebrated the official opening of the New York premiere of the musical Alice By Heart with book by Steven Sater with Jessie Nelson, music by Duncan Sheik, lyrics by Steven Sater and directed by Jessie Nelson.

Hartford Stage Artistic Director Darko Tresnjak and Managing Director Michael Stotts will present Samuel Baum's The Engagement Party, directed by Tresnjak. Zach Appelman, Richard Bekins, Mia Dillon and Beth Riesgraf lead the cast. The world premiere play will perform Thursday, January 10, through Sunday, February 3, 2019.

Director Julie Taymor joins Susan Haskins-Doloff and guest co-host Donna Hanover of Arts in the City to look back at creating her masterpiece of musical theater, The Lion King (the most lucrative production in history), and reflect on how she herself responds to the work now, 20 years after it opened. The three are then joined by writer David Henry Hwang to discuss Taymor's new production of Hwang's Tony Award-winning play, M. Butterfly, which he has significantly rewritten for this Broadway revival. Also on the show, Jelani Remy, now playing the adult Simba in the The Lion King on Broadway, performs Endless Night, a song from the show with lyrics by Taymor.

Today we celebrate a tremendous landmark for one of Broadway's favorite shows, The Lion King, as it observes 20 years on the Great White Way.
