BWW Reviews: Insight Theatre Company's Nicely Mounted 1776
by Chris Gibson - Jul 3, 2013

It's only fitting that while we're celebrating Independence Day there's a production of the musical 1776 being staged by a local theatre group. After all, it's not has-been bands at local fairs and fireworks displays that we're supposed to be honoring on this particular occasion, but rather the principles which this country was founded upon. And, 1776 is an entertaining and informative show (book by Peter Stone, and music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards) that attempts to set this historical event to music. Although it's often uneven in tone, it's an engaging ride nonetheless, and Insight Theatre Company's current production is a solid interpretation driven by some fine performances.

BWW Reviews: Stages St. Louis Presents Stunning Production of ALWAYS...PATSY CLINE

ALWAYS...PATSY CLINE is a wonderful show, brimming with good humor and a great selection of classic country tunes. More than just a tribute show, this musical offering actually has a story to tell to go along with its superb collection of material covered by the iconic singer. But, what really makes this show successful are the performances by the cast and the band, all of whom do absolutely impeccable work. With the entire run sold out, or nearly so, this review is just confirmation of what a lot of you already know; this is exceptional, must-see entertainment produced by Stages St. Louis.

BWW Reviews: STAGES St. Louis Puts On Flashy and Stylish MY ONE AND ONLY
by Chris Gibson - Sep 15, 2012

MY ONE AND ONLY is what I like to call a "retrofit" musical, appropriating tunes from the Gershwin brothers (Ira and George, of course) catalog, while creating a book (Peter Stone and Timothy Mayer) that incorporates familiar elements from 1927, the year it's set in. That being said, it's a slick and flashy excursion into fun that's "all talking, all singing, and all dancing". This final production of the season for Stages St. Louis is a terrifically convivial ride utilizing the old "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back" plot that so many musicals, particularly from that era, rely on.

BWW Reviews: Wonderful, Charming THE SOUND OF MUSIC at Stages St. Louis
by Chris Gibson - Jul 29, 2012

There are a number of reasons that Rodgers and Hammerstein's THE SOUND OF MUSIC is still so popular today. The songs are definitely catchy and familiar, and the story is compelling. But, it takes a good cast and solid direction to make it work properly, and the troupe that Stages St. Louis has corralled are excellent in their roles. This venerable warhorse of a show is their current production, and its charm still holds up remarkably well after all these years.

BWW Reviews: Stages St. Louis's Delightful Production of THE JUNGLE BOOK
by Chris Gibson - Jun 28, 2012

The musical adaptation of the 1967 animated feature film, THE JUNGLE BOOK, is a sheer delight, perhaps best viewed through the eyes of a child. And, the first production I ever took my young son to see was this same show a few years back. But, he was so small he didn't really remember it that well. So, the opportunity to see it again afforded me the perfect chance to reacquainted him with its many charms. Stages St. Louis's presentation didn't disappoint, providing a crisply paced production that fully captured my son's attention and imagination once again.
