BWW Photo Exclusive: Behind the Scenes with 9 TO 5, THE MUSICAL at STAGES St. Louis

A bright and brand new production for STAGES St. Louis, 9 to 5, The Musical has audiences laughing, crying, and cheering the exploits of Violet, Judy, and Doralee. Based on the seminal 1980 hit movie starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dolly Parton, this hilarious musical romp explores friendship and revenge while its heroines attempt to break the glass ceiling and take control of the company that has always kept them down. BroadwayWorld has a sneak peek behind the scenes below!

BWW Review: STAGES St. Louis's Hilarious Must-See 9 TO 5

It's not surprising that the 1980 film 9 to 5 was turned into a musical, since it's revenge driven farcical plot is a natural fit, and it's a period piece, so it has that going for it as well. Plus, you have Dolly Parton, whose physical attributes sometimes make one forget how great a songwriter she is, providing material written for the show, and adding pieces plucked from her own recordings. It's a great show for a strong and varied female cast, and STAGES' current production doesn't disappoint, with the lead roles filled by outstanding performers. And, one thing is certain, it's a real crowd-pleaser, generating tons of laughs, and a number of memorable moments.

BWW Review: Stunning FOLLIES at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis

While I was watching FOLLIES, I was reminded of our own beloved Fox Theatre, and how it had tread a similar path during the 1970's. Like the fictional Weismann Theatre where this story's action takes place, it had been fallen on hard times, reduced to screening Kung-Fu and exploitation film fare before being renovated and reopened. But there is no restoration in the cards for the Weismann, and the people that come to it for one final celebrated glimpse may be nearing the point of being past reclamation themselves. This is superior Sondheim, and though it's not revived as often as some of his other works, it's full of the kind of interweaving melodies and motifs that this master composer is so adept at creating. Find out for yourself just how compelling and engaging this musical is by seeing The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis' stunning production that opens their 50th season.
