RAISIN' CANE Plays Byham Theater Tonight

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the Pittsburgh premiere of Raisin' Cane: A Harlem Renaissance Odyssey, starring Jasmine Guy and The Avery Sharpe Trio, which will be performed tonight, April 16, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., at the Byham Theater, 101 Sixth Street, Pittsburgh's Cultural District. This event is part of the Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents series, presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. The creative concept for this production was inspired by the classic 1923 Jean Toomer novel 'Cane' and works by the musicians, composers, poets and actors of the Harlem Renaissance. The Arizona Daily Star said, 'Cane is a sweet salute to Harlem's glory days' and the Dayton Daily News wrote the performance was 'Lively, informative, motivating and entertaining...'

THE JOY OF SAX Begins Later This Month at 59E59 Theaters

59E59 Theaters will welcome Peter and Will Anderson with THE JOY OF SAX, featuring Pat Bianchi on the Hammond B-3 Organ. Produced by Reardon-Anderson Music, LLC., THE JOY OF SAX begins performances on Tuesday, April 28 for a limited engagement through Thursday, May 7. Photo Coverage: Luba Mason Brings MIXTURA to 54 Below

54 Below presented a special night with LUBA MASON - the Broadway star of Chicago, Jekyll & Hyde, The Capeman, among many others, last night and Broadwayworld was there. Fresh off the smash success of the Off-Broadway musical Pretty Flilthy - for which she was hailed as 'outstanding' by The New York Times, 'deliciously droll' by The Hollywood Reporter and 'straight up and affecting' by The New York Daily News - she will present an updated version of her concert Mixtura. Luba's trademarked blend of different musical currents, Mixtura is hybrid musical format consisting of various styles that can also be in any language. The 54 Below evening will include the work of diverse songwriters such as Van Morrison ('Moondance'), Cole Porter ('Love For Sale'), Kander & Ebb ('All That Jazz') and Lou Reed ('Pale Blue Eyes'), in addition to original songs from her Brazilian jazz album Krazy Love. Mixtura will also feature a special version of her breakout number 'Beautiful' by Michael Friedman from Pretty Filthy. You can watch the song 'In Performance' from The New York Times here. Previous incarnations of Mixtura were called 'powerful' by The Huffington Post and 'rapturous musical heaven' by Times Square Chronicles. Kate Davis Set for Residency at Bemelmans Bar in The Carlyle

The Carlyle, a Rosewood Hotel, is pleased to welcome revered multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Kate Davis to Bemelmans Bar for a Sunday night residency. A Silver Winner of the National YoungArts Foundation, Kate became a New York transplant in 2009 when she enrolled at the Manhattan School of Music. Recently, Kate has shared the stage with such diverse artists as Alison Krauss, Josh Groban, Michael Feinstein, Ben Folds, Joshua Bell, Wynton Marsalis, and Renee Fleming. Her cover of Meghan Trainor's pop staple "All About That Bass," with PostModern Jukebox, has become a viral sensation with over 11 million YouTube views since September. She'll bring her fresh perspective on the standards to Bemelmans Sunday nights, May 3-31.

Dustin Hoffman Drama AMERICAN BOYCHOIR Set for NYC & LA Theatrical Release Today

Over its 77-year history, world-renowned vocal ensemble American BOYCHOIR has performed in many of the world's grandest venues and with legends from across the musical spectrum. Director François Girard's (of The Red Violin) BOYCHOIR marks the choir's first feature film appearance. After premiering to rave reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2014, BOYCHOIR sees its initial U.S. arthouse release at New York City's Village East Cinema and Los Angeles' Laemmle Encino Town Center today, April 3, 2015. National YoungArts Foundation Now Accepting Applications for 2016

Today the National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts), the non-profit organization that recognizes and nurtures the nation's most talented young artists in the visual, literary, design and performing arts, announced that applications to become a 2016 YoungArts Winner will be accepted from April 21, 2015 through October 16, 2015. Young artists between the ages of 15 and 18 or in high school grades 10-12 (as of December 1, 2015) across the nation are encouraged to apply online at http://www.youngarts.org/apply.

CCCADI to Host Spring Gala

As Harlem continues to shift into a new era, plans are slated to renovate a local firehouse on 120 East 125th Street to serve as the new home for the historic East Harlem Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI).

Lila Downs to Celebrate Day of the Dead at Segerstrom Center, 10/25

Grammy® Award-winning Mexican-American music star Lila Downs, who fuses popular music genres and indigenous Mexican music, celebrates Di?a de Muertos (Day of the Dead) at Segerstrom Center for the Arts on October 25, 2015. Downs will showcase some of her newest songs from Balas y Chocolate (Bullets & Chocolate) that was released on March 24, 2015. The recording features Colombian musician Juanes, a three-time Latin Grammy Award-winner. Downs explains that “[Balas y Chocolate] was inspired by both the Day of the Dead offering and celebration and also from my personal dance with my partner's possible death.” She has a “stunning voice, a confident multicultural vision grounded in her Mixtec Indian roots,” says Los Angeles Times. Indeed, her impressive vocal range is as much a musical delight as a platform for her concerns for social justice in Mexico.
